The 2nd Xl returned
to CCA Senior League Division 1 with a sensational 19-run victory at The
Avenue on Saturday, against the side who finished in third spot last year.
Batting first, the
home team put 84 runs on the board without loss in 25 overs. Robert Moden
crashed 10 boundaries on his way to 52, with David Haslegrave scoring 31.
But when they both
went there was a mini collapse to 114-5 before Ben Pyle(24) and Stuart Mills
(21) put on 38 runs for the sixth wicket.
A handy 25 runs in
the final four overs from Richard Green (13no) and David Hodson (10no) saw a
competitive final total of 185-7.
Histon went well for
a start but with the introduction of spin at both ends lost wickets.
Off-spinner Green and left-armer James Harradine shared six wickets - Green
taking 3-39 off his 12 overs and Harradine 3-30 off his maximum.
With Mills back on
the field following a twisted ankle, the seamer wrapped up proceedings with
figures of 4-37, as Histon were shot out for 166.
March 2nd Xl v Somersham
Sunday, May 8, 2011
The 2nd Xl suffered a
heavy 118-run defeat against an experienced Somersham side
in their first Fenland Trophy game at The Avenue on Sunday.
After the visitors had
totalled 214-6 in their 40 overs, March slumped to a
disappointing 96 all out in only the 22nd over.
The only March players
to impress with bat were opener Jake Beart (23) and wicket
keeper Gary Nicholls, who hit a swashbuckling 42 off only 32
balls. March collapsed from 32-0 to 47-7 before the late
rally by Nicholls.
Earlier the wickets were
shared by Matt Hubbard, Marcus Kirby, John and David
Haslegrave and Nathan Oliver, who all took one wicket
apiece.
March 2nd Xl v Great Shelford
Saturday, May 14, 2011
Having
got off to a flyer on the opening day, the 2nd Xl came down to earth with a
bump, when they lost by eight wickets at Great Shelford in CCA Senior League
Division 1.
Batsman
in form, Rob Moden, tucked the first delivery of the game to the boundary
and followed that up with another four in the opening over. But at 25
without loss he played a shot he won't be proud of to lose his wicket for
18.
That started the rot
and the visitors soon found themselves 50-7 against a very useful seam
attack. Stuart
Mills and Richard Green then put on 65 valuable runs - Mills hitting three
'sixes' in his 44, with Green contributing 18.
However, another
mini-collapse saw the last three wickets fall without a single run being
scored on the final total of 115.
That was never going to be enough
for last season's Senior League
Division 2 champions, who only
lost two wickets in reply - both of which fell to off-spinner Green.
March 2nd Xl v Chatteris
Sunday, May 15, 2011
When you are suffering from major team raising
problems, the last game you need is against the reigning Fenland
Trophy Champions.
That was the 2nd Xl's fate on Sunday when
Chatteris produced a huge 327-2
total to win the fixture by 173
runs.
Despite David Haslegrave bowling former first team
all-rounder Kurt Cunningham in the first over, a superb third wicket
unbeaten partnership of 208 between Olly Fox (130no) and Joe Menarry
(112no) put the home side in a comfortable winning position.
In reply, skipper Stephen Wallis (41) and Haslegrave (40) featured
in the 154-8 March total.
March 2nd Xl v Camden 2nd Xl
Saturday, May 21, 2011
Over the years there's
been some toing and froing of players between March and Doddington - this
time the 2nd Xl seem to have struck gold with Ben Pyle and Dan Martell,
whose terrific fourth wicket stand of 119 helped overcome a strong Camden
2nd Xl side by six wickets in CCA Senior League Division 1.
The young pairing came
together at
71-3 at Pembroke College, where the track was like a road and the outfield
like glass. Pyle, who also picked up three wickets in Camden's 193-7, scored
58 and Martell remained unbeaten on 55, with Rob Cumming making 39 at the
top of the order.
Opening the bowling, Pyle returned
figures of 3-50, with his strike partner Stuart Arnold bowling superby to
concede just 31 runs off his 12 overs.
When they had finished the home
side were 84-3 and then went to 99-6 before a sensible partnership of 80
runs put a good total on the board. The remaining wickets were shared
with third team skipper Matt Hubbard taking 2-48.
March 2nd Xl v Witcham
Sunday, May 22, 2011
The
2nd Xl suffered their third consecutive Fenland Trophy defeat when newcomers
to the competition Witcham beat them by eight wickets at The Avenue on Sunday.
Inserted by the visitors,
March totalled 191-7 with opener Jake Beart making an entertaining 41 and
skipper Stephen Wallis an unbeaten 58. Youngsters Nathan Foad (26) and Toby Nulty
(25) made useful contributions.
However, the visitors cruised home in the 32nd
over for the loss of only two wickets, despite being
pegged back by opening bowlers Matt Hubbard and Toby Nulty in the
first 10 overs - scoring only 30 runs.
Witcham's opening partnership of
Nigel Pate (98) and Jamie Lawrence (66) added 169 runs for the
first wicket against an inexperienced bowling attack.
March 2nd Xl v Horseheath
Saturday, May 28, 2011
The
2nd Xl's lower middle order really kicked in with 92 runs off the final 10 overs
to overpower visitors Horseheath by 65 runs in CCA Senior League Division 1 at
The Avenue.
Skipper John Wallis and
Richard Green in fact smashed 58 runs in just six overs in an unbeaten stand to
post 218-7. Wallis finished on 34 not out and Green 33 not out, with Andy Wright
chipping in with a timely 21, as the visitors appeared to wilt in the field.
Matty Vail hit a very fine 79 at the top of the order,
as wickets tumbled around him. The stylish left-hander cracked 13
boundaries, including a 'six' as the total went from 64-3 to 125-6.
Four wickets in his second
spell from Callum Young put the skids under the visitors, who were dismissed for
153.
The university student bagged 4-15
in a five over burst to finish with figures of 4-34 off 12 overs.
Earlier, Stuart Mills had taken the
first two wickets to fall, with Wright and Stuart Arnold also bagging a
brace.
