Ed Batt and Dave Tufnail made their first appearances of the season and helped
inspire the 2nd Xl to a comfortable eight wicket win against Balsham at The
Avenue in CCA Senior League Division 1.
No less than six changes were
made from the previous week, as Batt crashed an unbeaten 56 on his club debut
and Tufnail took 3-20 off 12 overs. Tufnail, who has
just returned from Afghanistan, hadn't bowled a ball since last August.
The visitors were bowled out for 110 despite a
number of dropped catches, with opening seam
bowler Callum Young taking 3-26.
Having not bowled, surprise opener James
Beresford scored 25 before Batt and David Haslegrave (21no) came together for an
unbeaten match-winning third wicket stand of 63.
Batt
hit seven boundaries before finishing the game
off in style with a big 'six'.
March 2nd Xl v Histon
Saturday,
August 13, 2011
A thrilling last over win for the 2nd Xl keeps them in second spot in CCA Senior
League Division 1, following a two wicket success against Histon.
The home side had former Cambs
star Ian Lawrence making an unbeaten 119 in their 208-4 total - this after
Callum Young and Josh Jackman had reduced them to 2-2 at the start.
Jackman then top-scored with
49, although Histon conceded 45 extras mainly due to Alfie Dixon bowling no less
than 33 wides!
Jackman and Dan Martell put on 44 runs
together with the latter going for 20 as the momentum was maintained at 136-5
with 10 overs left.
That was reduced to 30 runs needed in the final five overs
and there's no better man for
the job than Richard Green - the No8 seeing the side home with an unbeaten 37
with one ball to spare.
Green cleared the ropes twice in the
final 211-8 total.
March 2nd Xl v Witcham
Sunday,
August 14, 2011
The 2nd Xl cruised to a nine wicket victory against a young Witcham
side to move up to second place in the Fenland Trophy.
Teenager Toby Nulty (3-18) and 3rd Xl skipper Matt Hubbard (4-28)
helped reduce the home side to 17-4 in only the fifth over.
Youngsters Sam Mason 2-16 and Jacob Gray 1-27 then finished off the
job to dismiss Witcham for 93 in the 23rd over.
However, the
fireworks really started when the in-form
James Beresford struck 44 not out
together with David Haslegrave 38 not out in an undefeated 52 run
winning partnership for the second wicket.
Beresford hit seven
boundaries, including three 'sixes', and Haslegrave struck just one
boundary less.
March 2nd Xl v St Giles
Saturday,
August 20, 2011
Opener James Harradine smashed 76 for the 2nd Xl, as they gained
sweet revenge over St Giles - one of only two teams to beat them
this season in CCA Senior League Division 1.
Second in the table March picked up an impressive 48-run
victory, having posted a 161-8 total.
Harradine hit eight
boundaries, including two which flew over the boundary, and figured in an
opening stand of 39 with Rob Moden (16).
Wickets fell until
teenager Toby Nulty (11) helped put on 42 runs for the fifth wicket.
Richard Green then weighed in
with 23 at the end.
The home side then found themselves 88-3 with 17 overs
remaining. Step forward Callum Young with two quick wickets in
his second spell for an impressive 4-25. Two wickets apiece from
Green and Andy Wright, sealed St Giles' fate at 113 all out.
Off-spinner Green took
2-29 and Wright 2-28, with fourth choice wicketkeeper Moden impressing with four
catches, a stumping and a run out!
March 2nd Xl v Wisbech 3rd Xl
Sunday,
August 21, 2011
Half centuries by David Haslegrave and skipper Stephen Wallis
helped the Sunday 2nd Xl defeat Wisbech 3rd XI by 23 runs at The
Avenue and
consolidate second position in the Fenland Trophy with one game to
play.
Haslegrave (66) and Wallis (59) put on 108 for the second wicket,
with James Beresford continuing his explosive hitting with 30 off 25
balls in the 185-5 total.
Haslegrave hit eight
boundaries in total, including a 'six', with veteran opener Wallis
showing he has not lost any of his touch since turning 50 in April,
with six boundaries.
In
reply, Wisbech chased valiantly to the target and in
fading light were bowled out in the last over for
162, with Dominic Stannard scoring a dangerous
looking 38 before falling to experienced 3rd Xl
captain Matt Hubbard, who took 2-27.
The
other main wicket takers were youngsters Toby Nulty
3-19 and Jacob Gray 2-28.
March 2nd Xl v Hardwick
Saturday,
August 27, 2011
A dramatic batting collapse - six wickets falling in six overs -
put paid to the
2nd Xl's title hopes at Hardwick in the
top-of-the table clash in CCA Senior League Division 1.
Stand-in skipper
James Harradine was once again the top run-scorer with 67 but he could only
watch in vain as his side slumped from 110-4 to 118 all out away from home.
Harradine
lost his opening partner David Hodgson with just two runs on the
board and then saw two further wickets fall with the total only
registering 29.
But a
fourth wicket stand of 59 with Dan Martell (18) put them in a
better position, as the skipper cracked six boundaries including
two 'sixes'.
The
collapse started after 37 overs, as the visitors were shot out
in the 43rd over.
The openings attack of Josh Jackman and Callum Young gave a
lively reply - both university students picking up two wickets apiece.
Jackman took 2-42 and Young 2-18 from 11 overs.
But the
strong home side coasted
home by five wickets and a ticket into Tucker League Division 2.
