March 1st Xl v
Godmanchester
Saturday,
September 3, 2011
A crushing 112-run defeat at
the hands of third placed Godmanchester on Saturday has knocked the 1st Xl off
the top of the Tucker League for the first time since
June 11, as their third
reversal on the bounce sees them plummet to fourth place in the league.
Without the cutting edge of
a fully-fit Matt Wilcox the bowling attack again suffered with the home side racking up
251-8. Skipper Chris Ringham bowled a maximum 16 over stint taking 3-57 and
all-rounder Tommy Howgego took 3-34 off five.
The Aussie did manage to run in for the first time
in a month, but he was unable to bowl at full tilt and add to his 48
Tucker League wickets.
Ringham picked up the scalps of both openers and
Tyler Phillips, who was doubtful through injury, added a third and again
showed what potential he has.
At 124-5 things were going well until
Godmanchester skipper Matthew Pateman up the pace and shared in a six
wicket stand of 98 on his way to an unbeaten 101.
With March having only scored 200 runs twice this
season a victory looked doubtful - particularly when leading run-scorer
Willcox was bowled in the fifth over.
His opening partner Howgego then made 26, with the impressive Carl Chapman scoring 56 in the all-out
total of 139. Chapman hit seven boundaries and has made a massive contribution
since returning to the club this season.
But once again five batsmen failed to trouble the scorer,
which in itself tells a story, with teenager
Tyler Phillips weighing in with 22 at No.9.
Ramsey now head the table,
with March 12 points off the pace and two games to play.
