Super Matt Wilcox smashed
136 runs, took three wickets and clung on to three sharp slip catches as the
1st Xl beat Nassington by 53 runs in the Tucker League at The Avenue on
Saturday, to climb within three points of top spot.
The 19-year-old Aussie
claimed his first century of the summer as he reached 750 runs for the
season, in the all out total of 226.
Having lost two early wickets,
Wilcox helped put on 109 runs for the third
wicket with Rob Tombs, who returned to form with a knock of 52 that
contained 10 boundaries.
Wilcox, meanwhile, scored his runs off 128 balls -
hitting 20 boundaries in the process, before
picking up 3-57 with his pace bowling after tea. Together with skipper Chris
Ringham, who picked up
3-36 during an economical 13 over stint, the visitors found themselves five
wickets down for 105.
Off-spinner Shardul
Brahmbhatt then helped clinch victory with a 4-48 spell as Nassington were
dismissed for 173.
March 1st Xl v Uppingham
Sunday, June 5, 2011
A
terrific all-round display from Stuart Mills has taken the 1st Xl out of the
relegation zone of Rutland League Division 1, following a much needed 63-run win
over Uppingham at The Avenue on Sunday.
The vice-skipper hit a
courageous 58 at No.9, with Matt Wilcox (36) and Shardul Brahmbhatt (31)
weighing in valuable runs in the 206-9 total. Mills then picked up his second
five wicket haul of the weekend to return figures of 5-39 in the Uppingham total
of 143.
After heavy defeats against the top sides, the first
team were desperate for points, but at
125-7 the prospects looked bleak, before a great 71-run eighth wicket stand
between Mills and
3rd Xl batsman Brett Tinnion totally changed the situation.
Both were out in the final over - Mills having hit six
boundaries, half of which sailed over the ropes, with sixteen-year-old
Tinnion making a crucial 18 runs.
Wilcox then added to his wicket tally for the season by
removing the first three batsmen inside his opening four overs. That knocked
the stuffing out of the visitors and set Mills up for 'Man of the Match'
following his five wickets. Rishi Brahmbhatt took 2-42 to complete the win.
March 1st Xl v Granta 2nd Xl
Saturday, June 11, 2011
The Matt Wilcox Roadshow
rolls on with back-to-back Saturday centuries and a six wicket haul, as the
1st Xl take top spot in the Tucker League following their comfortable seven
wicket win against bottom side Cambridge Granta 2nd Xl, at Clare College.
The young Aussie followed
up his 136 against Nassington with an unbeaten 113 in the March reply of
177-3, which came up in just 31 overs, to go five points clear at the top.
Earlier, Wilcox had taken 6-57...three wickets coming in each of two spells,
as Granta were bowled out for 183.
This week his bowling took centre stage at the start -
picking up three scalps inside his first six overs, as Granta soon found
themselves 38-4.
Defiant middle-order batting gave them some hope, but
once Wilcox was back on bowling in tandem with off-spinner Shardul
Brahmbhatt, that was it. Brahmbhatt picked up another 3-58.
The pair then batted together, as Brahmbhatt weighed in
with 28 runs for the second wicket and Rob Tombs 22 runs for the third
wicket.
But it was all about the boy from Dingley Village,
Melbourne, who plundered 13 boundaries in his 2hr 10mins stay at the crease.
Footnote: Ever wondered what superfood the Wizard
of Aus tucks into? Well, this week he was seen round chairman Les's eating
mandarin oranges in orange jelly and vanilla ice cream. Kiddies food could
well be the next fad diet for all-rounders!

March 1st Xl v Godmanchester
Saturday, June 18, 2011
A devastating six wicket haul
from skipper Chris Ringham kept the 1st Xl top of the Tucker League, as they
managed to squeeze out a four wicket win over third in the table Godmanchester,
at The Avenue on Saturday.
The left-arm in-swing
bowler made full use of the cloud cover with a 6-24 haul, as he and Matt
Wilcox
bowled the visitors out for just 74 runs.
Ringham took a wicket with his second delivery and
followed that up with two more inside his first five overs, as four of
Godmanchester's top six failed to register a run.
With Wilcox returning figures of 4-42, the visitors went
from 34-5 to the lowest total recorded on the ground this year.
But it took a brisk 39 from Shardul
Brahmbhatt to bring home the 20 points after Aussie run-machine Wilcox made a
rare failure with the bat.
He went in the second over for just a single, to bring
his run of consecutive Tucker League centuries to an end. However,
Brahmbhatt crashed two 'sixes' in six boundaries during a 34 ball knock,
with Carl Chapman in a similar mood for his 11 not out in the 75-6 winning
score.
Footnote: Lucky omen or what? When County Over
50s manager Ray Daniels has stood as umpire, Ringham has taken 26 wickets in
five games!
March 1st Xl v Market Deeping
Sunday, June 19, 2011
Matt Wilcox smashed through the 1,000-run barrier for the season in sensational
style on Sunday with his third century in as many weeks, as the 1st Xl disposed
of Rutland League Division 1 strugglers Market Deeping to the tune of 154 runs.
The young Aussie hit 111 in
the side's 229 all out total at The Avenue, with opening partner Tommy Howgego
making 37, in a first wicket stand of 122.
Wilcox struck 18 boundaries, including three 'sixes', as
he reached four figures for the season in league games alone.
Lower down the order Josh Jackman made a welcomed return
from university with a timely 22, with Scott Welcher scoring 17.
The Deeping openers made a steady start
but following their departure the side was bowled out for
just 75 runs, with off-spinner Shardul Brahmbhatt taking 5-13 off just seven
overs.
His brother Rishi also picked up two wickets in only 11
balls to finish the match in style and provide Stuart Mills with a vital win
on his senior captaincy debut.
