Tucker League leaders Camden completed a
convincing double over the 1st Xl, who this season have been outfought by the
top three sides.
Skipper Chris Ringham took 4-73, but four
dropped catches enabled the home side to declare on 210-8 with four overs in
hand.
At 58-4 that looked an unlikely total, but spilled catches saw the home
side claw their way to 126 before the fall of the next wicket.
Stuart Mills suffered more than most wih the indifferent fielding display
- having two dropped catches and a wicket from a 'no ball' ruled out during
his 2-58 spell.
As it turned out the extra overs were never needed, as March were skittled
out for 126, with Rob Tombs top-scoring with 23. Together with David
Haslegrave (17) he helped take the total to 48 with just the loss of both
openers, but at 75-5 the writing was well on the wall
Teenage wicketkeeper David Hodson made a quickfire 20
at No.9, as the tail kicked in with some token runs as March were dismissed
off 36.1 overs.
March 1st Xl v Isham
Sunday, August 1, 2010
A superb second wicket stand of 129
between Matt Wilcox and Rob Tombs was the highlight of an otherwise dismal
afternoon at Isham, where the home side leap-frogged the 1st Xl into second
place in Rutland League Division 2.
The Aussie hit 75 and Tombs 62 in the 234
total, which took Isham just 37 overs to overtake as the March bowling was
despatched to all parts of the compact ground.
Wilcox struck 14 boundaries and Tombs nine as the 100 came up in the 18th
over. But when the pair had departed, March had to rely upon scraps for the
remainder of the innings, with David Hodson the best of the rest with a
score of 19.
Isham were quick out of the traps in reply with Wilcox and Stuart Mills
taking the only two wickets to fall. But on a positive note 18-year-old
Jordan Morgan again caught the eye with seven sharp overs opening the
bowling.
March 1st Xl v Nassington
Saturday, August 7, 2010
Another tense finish at The Avenue on Saturday
saw the 1st Xl scrape home by a one wicket margin against Nassington, thanks to
a five wicket haul from Matt Wilcox and a rain break.
Wet weather meant five overs lost in the Tucker
League encounter and March's original target of 146 for victory was reduced to
133. Just as well, as skipper and No.11 batsman Chris Ringham was required to
drive the ball down the ground for a winning three runs.
Earlier, he picked up 3-37, as Nassington
recovered from 37-5 against the bowling of Wilcox, who finished with 5-29.
It was the Aussie's opening seven over spell that had the visitors
reeling. He bagged four wickets for 21 at that stage. The bowling unit as a
whole performed well, with Stuart Mills taking 1-38 off 11 and Andy Wright
1-27.
After tea the top five batsmen all made a start but no-one was able to
produce a big score, as the game lay in the balance. Steve Hinson made 23,
Wilcox 22 and Matty Vail struck three 'sixes' in his 22, as he and Wright
put on 31 for the eighth wicket.
But in the end it came down to the final pairing to secure the points and
keep the team in fourth spot.
March 1st Xl v Nassington
Sunday, August 8, 2010
This was a more comfortable win than the previous day against the same
opposition, with five wickets from Richard Green putting the 1st Xl back in
contention in Rutland League Division 2.
The visitors elected to bat for the second day running at The Avenue, but
lost early wickets to Matt Wilcox, Chris Ringham and Stuart Mills.
Off-spinner Green then went to work and catches went to hand, as he
returned figures of 5-43 in the all out total of 163.
The March batting was almost a replica of Saturday's with most batsmen
making a score. Wilcox finished with 36, Rob Tombs with 41 and Mills 28 not
out as the total was chased down for the loss of five wickets.
March 1st Xl v Khalsa
Saturday, August 29, 2010
The 1st Xl laid their Khalsa hoodoo to rest
thanks to a six wicket burst from Aussie Matt Wilcox in the five wicket Tucker
League win at The Avenue on Saturday.
The opening quickie didn't bowl in the previous
game between the two sides when March were bowled out for just 83 - and in 2009
they lost both games to the newly promoted Peterborough based outfit.
This time
round Khalsa found themselves 27-7 and with no way back. Wilcox was on fire at
the pavilion end - taking 4-14 during his opening seven over spell, to finish
with 6-14
Skipper Chris Ringham conceded just 16 runs from his first spell of 12 overs
-with final figures of 2-38 as the visitors were all out for 128.
One of the other two wickets to fall came from former county all-rounder Ed
Rodgers who, in his first game of the season at March, collected a scalp with
his second delivery.
Rogers answered a call for help, as did former batting legend Dave Kenning -
in order for the second and third teams to put out their strongest sides for two
crucial games.
After tea Wilcox was not so fluent running between the
wickets, as March soon found themselves 30-3. However, following a further
wicket an unbeaten 49 from
Steve Hinson and 43 from Matty Vail saw the two produce a fifth wicket stand of
79.
Hinson struck seven boundaries and Vail six, including one shot which sailed
over the boundary, as the target was reached with overs to spare.
Chairman's Xl v President's Xl
Sunday, August 30, 2010
The smiles were on the face of
club president Mel Pooley at The Avenue on Sunday, when his team ran out victors
by 33 runs...avenging last year's defeat at the hands of chairman Les Mills' Xl.
The president's team accumulated runs
slowly at first then Nigel Wright (36), Rob Tombs (59 retired) and Matty Vail
(55 retired) pushed the run-rate up. A flurry of wickets in the last few overs
restricted the total to 206 in 46.1 overs.
Bowlers taking wickets were James
Beresford
(2-29), skipper Stuart Mills (2-17) - with Andy Wright, Matt Hubbard, Richard
Green and Tommy Howgego one apiece.
In response, the chairmans XI lost an
early wicket but gradually increased their rate with Matt Wilcox (70 retired)
supported by Mills (23) and Richard Green (20). They eventually stumbled along
to 173 all out in 40.1 overs.
Wicket takers were Jordan Morgan
(2-42), Callum Young (2-24), Jake Wenman (2-18, Tombs (2-12) and John Haselgrave
(1-32).
After the match the now traditional
sausage and mash supper was provided and the club would like to thank the
chairman and presidents for their hospitality.
